wow is the way to describe this designer.
Paula scher is a New York based graphic designer who has blown the minds of many over the year with her great designs. she is the dame of design and most definitely a graphic design rock star with her anarchy and rule breaking habit’s. i love all of her work, but mostly for her inventive use of typography which has influenced many of designer and will forever more.
i find her a great idol to follow as a female in the design world, as she has set the stage for woman of design to come and show there talent but most of all enjoy the design experience that is to come. more and more we are seeing woman designers spreading there wings and showing great pertential so i thank paula for help us get to where we are today.
also when Paula was a young designer like i, she did really understand the do’s and don’t of design mixing the history of art and styles together to create album cover. she love some great designers but really hated the trend at the time she was learning, as everything was getting made in Helvetica and she found it the cleanest, most boring, most fascistic really repressive typeface. she decided that her goal was to design in something other that helvetica.
don’t get me wrong i don’t hate Helvetica, i love it for it purpose and the way it cleaned up identities in it time. but i don’t want to uses it for all of my design work, in some instance it works depending on your client and their ideals and what the purpose of the work is and it out-come.
i love her quotes:
Bigger is definitely better. Bold words wrap you up and pull you in. You’re hooked!
my work is play, i play when i design.
Be culturally literate, because if you don’t have any understanding of the world you live in and the culture you live in, you’re not going to express anything to anybody else.”

The Public Theatre logo
the timeline for the logo by Paula Scher for the public theatre. it is urban and loud, i love these designs am i a big fan of her logo design they are bold eye catching typography i love the way she’s played with kerning, tracking, the horizontal scale, size and colour choices. i love the way she put the inside the letter P as it still legible but but not that important. in the time she worked with The
Public Theatre paula did a number of poster which were eye catching and loud in the way they were design :

The Public Theatre posters
this poster was innovative and unique in it time and paula really got people looking with her type that really got you interested and really spoke out, the design was liked that much that other people started copying the style and it ended up all over new york. i love the slight dada feel to it moving away from the traditional type formation of baselines size direction etc. i feel designing in this way really catch your eye and makes you want to know more and more. which is a great thing for us designer to achieve with all briefs.
both poster really sold the interesting stuff that was going on there at the time.

the Public Theatre-under the radar poster
this is another of her public theatre designs which i find inspiring, as i love the modernism era especially in graphics design the way that thing are still well control and legible yet the off set layout give it that creative edge. i love the way it flows with the hierarchy, using size and colour. the information is well communicated and is easily understood.

Interior environmental graphics-42nd Street Studios|The Duke Theater.
i am a big fan of environmental graphic using the object and the spaces already there. using the context in which the work will soon be placed as the canvas. i love the concept and it navigational qualities.paula designed a beautiful way to show information graphic, breaking up different areas of the studio into colour coordinated section which are easy to identify and navigate.
i really like the colour choices and layout of the text and the direction in which they go. see no need to spend more money on signs especially with the situation we are all in financially, but even so there’s no need when the building floors, walls and ceilings are there to do the job.

exterior view of the New Jersey Performing Art Centre
i really like the idea of this exterior design. designed using the college’s subjects to decorate the building.

This work really excite me lol. make me want live on or work on the 5th floor so i can have it haha. the idea is bigger better and bolder than usual signage where you have to wall up right close to even know where you are. i love the way it fold on floor and ceiling and inspired one of my older projects. if i get my own studio well i hope to when i become a more experience designer i am going to create navigational signs on the interior and exterior of the building in a similar way. isnt it beautiful.
well as you can see i have great appreciation for Paula Scher and feel like i could write extensively about each and every piece of her work for hours and go on about how much it excite me but if you have taste you too feel the same. so i decided to write about a few things of hers i like and what inspires me and interested me at the moment. As depending on my mood or things I’m working on i think deeper about different work and find new thing about them that i might not of realized before.
fame is not the reason i love Paula Scher it her work and the innovative style which she bring to her work is what i love. the environmental graphic that is mind blowing and so creative inspires me. i love the way she don’t conform to a style or way of design and is forever reinventing herself, learning playing creating. it beautiful.
