Noma Bar: Negative Space

gun crime the big squeeze

Noma Bar recently creative book Negative space which at a second glance provokes the viewer. in his book he tackle global warming, race relations and national identity and has that of a ‘design of dissent’ nature against war, crime and power. It features many examples of editorial work for The New York Times, The Economist and The Guardian. Referring to his editorial work as a form of “pain relief” against issue in some of his articles

With these to example i am inspired by his use of the negative space using the background more wisely to also have a visual purpose. this image within an image is one that does provoke the viewer and get you looking and thinking longer, which to any artist or designer in key to a good piece of work.

Persue Graffiti artist

Persue is an established graffiti artist who has been spraying walls since the late eighties. his work consists of lettering and illustrations with great detail. His tag is Persue written per-sway he represents COD[children of doom] from the Bronx, Stick up Kids, The Seventh Letter, Bunny Kitty, Transcendental, Bloodclots and SBA, which are his spraying crews that take on a global scale.

What interested me about Persue is his work he’s done off the street and into the fashion, graphic design and business world. He’s was involved launching DC shoes, Osiris shoes, he was the talent behind the name and logo for Circa footwear. Persue has done countless amount of designs for T-shirts, Skateboard and Snowboard for brands like Special Blend, Dub, Tribal, Droors, Forum and Evol. He is currently President for Vox Footwear a Skateboarding shoe brand based out of Vista, California. Managing the company and design footwear with his loyal friend B House. He got involved in the industry around early nineties but Skateboarding was not as big back then but evidently as it grew so has Persue reputation as a talented artist. As he would say it putting ‘flavour’ into skateboarding art. Running a Shop also with his brothers with the name ‘Home’, which originally was a place where any average person could eat, drink, and mingle with some of the biggest names in entertainment. It was also at Home that some of the biggest names in entertainment could again feel like any average person. People like the legend John Lennon was one of the many faces that came to House back in day. Run by Richard Ross and with the help of his brothers connection with the stars it got a beautiful history. Persue being the nephew of Richard Ross has in recent years turned Home in a clothing store in the northern San Diego city of Encinitas, California. www.amomentinyourlife.com.

Here are some of his graphic design works:

His work is a fine example of what logos are looking like today. Especially in sub-cultured fashion of the youth and extreme sport culture. The graffiti like, illustrative logos work well within theses areas and give the companies a more creative edge, which Persue work is all about weather it be a mural on a wall, T-shirt design or side of a shoe. As ‘street art meets fashion’ is big in todays society we see many of graffiti artist work taking new direction in this way.

ever since i realized things were unethical, lacked equality or just seemed damn right wrong i found myself extremely interested in working for charity. wether that be the street team or most defiantly on the creative team. i know that most charities use different agencies on different subject but i would like to have input in help out these charity getting noticed for what they’re doing to make the world a better place here there and everywhere but more importantly make visible the devastating issue people are facing all around the world that people cannot see or acknowledge.

it all about shocking the viewer, creating a stir and curiosity with in the public realm with disturbing in your face imagery. this type of advertising has a love it or hate it audience, as people can either be hurt, traumatized or over exposed to things they wish not to acknowledge in their day to day lifes, or you get the people like myself who take notice, want to know more and help out as much as possible. all of this creates a huge amount of publicity, debate and sometime a ban depending on the intensity of the shocking imagery.

i was recently looking a Erik Vervroegen work he did for Amnesty International human right in china:

Amnesty international- Human rights

this ad was based on the olympics in china as it was happening at the time, so using the olympic sport to express the torture and truama people face in china, with a caption saying after the olympic games the fight for human rights must go on. Amnesty International to me have a amazing adverting style, so shocking and really catches your eyes wether you feel it good or bad.

Erik also did a great ad for aides:

Aides-aids ad

Aides-aids ad

these two ad caused a stir, for one they are a little pornography in the sense of nudity and the acts of pleasure but i feel they get to the point using insect which are poisonous to get the message across. Once again Erik has used shocking yet powerful imagery to open the eyes of the views to express the importance of using a condom.

UNITED COLOUR OF BENETTON

although United Colours of Benetton are a clothing company, they still use shock advertising to help sell product even thought they are not a charity they still touch on important issue that people are subjected to globally. in some ways this is wrong using it to sell products as it does not address the product purpose but grabs the eye of the potential buyer of the produce making discuss and debate the ads with people. killing two bird with one stone. getting people to buy his product yet addressing important issues on equality, sexuality, aids etc:

this ad expresses equality in a awesome way. using hearts to deliver the message that no matter the race we are all made of the same things, we are all human. yes its a little gross and a little shocking for using heart but this is the perfect way to deliver a message.

United Colors of Benetton

Sorry to say this image has been taken away from me as it apparently violates the right on photobucket.com but the image has coursed a mass of debate and the world went crazy as a black woman feeding a white baby is shocking, wrong to many people and confusing when you see this it never leaves your mind, is odd and rather outrageous especially for a clothing company.

United Color of Benetton-Aids-David Kirby

this image of a man dying of AIDS, surrounded by his family, shows the terryfying sight of a body devasted by the HIV virus. A way to denounce the dangers of AIDS and a means of continuing the battle against this terrible disease after the death. this ad was created in 1992 baring in mind that at this time people associated with aids or HIV where labelled with that of a quarantine idea. people dare go near them. so this image at it time really shocked the world and started to question the ways they used to feel about AID and the stigma attached to it. so for that i am greatful.

anmesty International- it not happening here but it happening now.

this ad won a D&AD award last year and you wonder why it a great way to engage the audience in understanding what is happening around the world but also shocking then by putting in to there scenery extreme well thought of by the switzerland creatives. one of best campaigns to date, well for me this blew me away and made me want to work for charity making issue visual to people unaware or put in the faces of those who chose to ignore it.

Do charity work is about understanding Diversity:

Diversity means more than race and gender-each individual is different and unique. I realised that diversity is treating people as equal, people are equal in their right to dignify and respect but not in their abilities. there is no doubt that Britain is become diverse, where people of different cultures, ethnicity’s, abilities, sexual orientations and styles working together and dealing with one another on a day to day basis. Diversity asks us to have an open mind to not just accept differences but to have value and to celebrate out differences.

         Some diverse subjects:

Culture

Ethnicity

Age

Sexual orientation

Disability

Race

Nationality

Education

Gender

Experience

Belief

As a designer I will produce work for a global market. By valuing diversity and keeping a constant open mind to all. I will be better equipped to meet challenges presented by global competition. Valuing diversity will help me have a better working relationship with colleagues, clients and even in everyday life.

recently i have been doing a hell of a lot of reading and have found a few theorist/critics/designers that writtings have inspired my way of thinking and thought process:

Rick Poyner and Ellen Lupton and katherine McCoy, Vignelli, paula scher

but most defernately these few reads:

BOOK1 :No more rules. graphic design and postmodernism Rick Poyer

well Rick Poyner decided to bravely challenge gathering a number of example that where the centre of postmodernism and creating a amazing book on the subject. really idenitfying some key themes in this style of dessign:

Deconstruction, authorship, origins, technology etc

it an on going read but really help you understand the different substyles in postmodernism and how these labels game about. understand your target audience to what the design should look like.this book also touches on designer as authorship and the opposition.

book2:

katherin McCoy she had written a number of inspiring essays on design and also inspired me with her students work from the 80′s Cranbrook Academy. also her essay in book:

Design Studies: theory and research in graphic design A. Bennett, S. Heller (2006) Princeton Architectual Press

- graphics desin in a multicultural world k. McCoy

talking about industrial revolution of mass inspiring the modernist ideals of one style fits all. but also talking about tailored messages for a specific audiences. a language, cultural values, needs and preferences that exist in audience centre design, which is what the postmodernist celebrated. Acknowledging the cultural diversity and sub-cultural audiences.

Book3

i have also already wrote about this in my recent blog but also i tell any1 who want a book on great modernist aesthetics massimo Vignelli downloadable pdf is amazing read to understand his basic structure to design:

Semantics, syntactics, pragmatics, discipline, appropriateness, Ambiguity, design is one, Visual power. intellectual elegance, timelessness, responsibility and equity.

which i believe are important to understand and know but you do not have to always acknowledge in everything you do, but still make you more aware of the knowledge to understand why you do things a certain way. Also this read give you and intellectual understand of a mondernists way of thinking.

book4:

Paula Scher make it bigger, is an awesome read. the book is about her career but also touching on other people thoughts, styles and style wars, what it like in the business of design, steps to the top etc. but also explain what design was like in her youth and the reason she is a postmodernist enjoying the loud expressive work she has produced. a brilliant read, well on going as it so thick.

internet:

Émigré site is an awesome read and the archive is brilliant, the essay by Rudy Vanderlans himself and Mr. keedy etc. great writtings on postmodernism

essays on :

in and around culture: Cultures of design and the design cultures

Graphic design in the postmodern era.

interview with rick poynor.

Since i was a young teen i have always been interested in magazine design.i always found youth culture magazines so inspiring. the way they pull you in all loud expressive screaming “HELLO READ ME”. visually powerful and such creative talent. i wanted to know more. i mean i love the way they are design with no structure or singular grid system. splashed with photos, drawings, body copy, loud headings and colour choice. all off the wall styles and no consistency through out. i love the way that each page or spread has a personality depending on the designer and the content but where did this style come from how did this post modernist approach appear…

so for this curiosity i decided to do my dissertation on modernism vs postmodernism

My aim is to examine typographic styles. Questioning graphic design of certain times and trying to get a better understanding of the ideologies and what affected them. I planned to do this in a number of ways to gain a more intense knowledge of design history. So I can come to acknowledge the deeper messages of their work rather than just visual inspiration. So I really feel the need to study their reasoning in much more detail.

The reason I have chosen this aspect of design as my subject is, I find that as a young creative growing up in an information technology culture. There is easy access to the job of well taught professionals just a click, search or illegal download away to those who have no real understanding. As a result of this we are drowned with good and bad design and large amount of typeface choices, which we have limited knowledge to what and why we use them. Recently I have felt the need to express the importance that typography and design history is a real crucial part of our development as graphic designers. I find that typography is a large discipline, as there is very little graphics design with out typography other than the likes of semiotics and it should be an intense study. So I want to gain a better understanding of typography through these two eras, which came one after the other and that inspire me intently.

I want to question the ideologies of a Swiss modernist consisting that of a formalist, rationalist nature to that of a Postmodernist more expressive, subjective and experimental nature through a series of methods but also question how they could work in today’s extremely multicultural society.

on doing research for my dissertation i found some key point to what really affected graphic design of these time.

i started look at Swiss modernist through the designer Jan Tschishold’s 1920 book New Typography, as it played a big part in modernist theory and became their manifesto. The Bauhaus methods of graphic design, that form follows function also shares the same ideas with designers and typographers such as Herbert Bayer, László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. Along with Massimo Vignelli- the Vignelli canon.pdf which shares his view of modernism.

in the 80′s was the arrival of the graphic macintosh computer, which changed the entire production process and became the creative tool especially for typography. this is where the digital era began.

post modernism begun with those who really was bored of the modernist ideals, clean and clear design and wanted to experienment more with typography, photography using elements across all creative media to create some mind blowing designs. the era arose mainly through university and colleges:

At Cranbrook academy, under Katherine McCoy students deconstructed the components of graphic design, their visual manifestation was chaotic typography, jumbled page and layouts that rejected conventional placement of headlines.

Also Rudy Vanderlans and co-found/wife Zuzana Licko’s Émigré typo-centric magazine was the main stage for experimental typographic design. Consisting layering, spacing, distorting, interweaving, fragmenting, decentering, bitmapping and so on. The first eight issues were concerned with boundaries, international culture, travel accounts and alienation (as the issues’ titles suggest). without a doubt Emigre the journal of experimental graphic design.

Recently I been reading Design Studies: theory and study in graphic design – graphics design in a multicultural world k. McCoy. Which has made me want to look at the eras through mass cultural communication and multicultural communication theory, as this has affected the design styles massively as far as target audiences go and has helped shaped there ideologies. As modernist designers were born of the industrial revolution of mass and responded to the economies of scale and standardization, especially in typography. Look at Herbert Bayer’s Univers typeface for example it really shares the same idea of one style fits all.

Where as the post modernist theory really questions this idea and was inspired by how high technology in factories were able to tailor product to individuals breaking up the masses, it influenced graphic design, therefore I feel need to examine the economical changes and communication theories of there times, which will really help me understand what help shape there ideals.

since doing this proposal i find myself still not sure on who’s rules to follow and what works in this 21st century of design but came to decide that i will bare in mind both the the theories and respect them but find my own rules to follow. which will follow or break the designers ideas before me.

Sopp Collective is a design group based in Sydney and London.I found the design group browsing throught computer arts magazine. They have a wide range of multi-disciplinary skills and within the collective they bring there skills together to benefit for each projects outcome. They have a unique style which court my eye and they experiment various process to get the best possible outcome of the visual communication.

i found them expremely interesting for there amazing ablum cover design portrait made out of leaves which was published in computer arts a year ago or so:

the falls-long time coming

the falls-long time coming

i am really interested in music packaging designs, as have a strong love for music and this album cover moves away from the usual photography and type, using nature materials to make a band portrait. i knew nothing of this band and what there music stood for when i seen this but the packaging made me remember it for it unique style and want to know more.

Sopp Collective

Sopp Collective

i like the wat the hair go’s along the whole CD case then becomes part of nature in to a tree. Sopp really have a unique style to there design and like there concepts very much. they have a lot to offer bands as there design make you want to pick up buy the CD even though you may not like it.

Sopp collective

this is pretty innovative as far as CD go. getting this stuff inside make it seem like a collectable and gives you more of what the music could be about or inspired from.

i find as a bassist myself.. well a terrible one at that i really would like to promote music and design for band thats music really touches me and takes me to new realms of creativity, like David Carson said in Helvetica movie:

” It’s very hard to do the more subjective, interpretative stuff well. I can teach anyone from the street how to design a reasonable business card, newsletter, but if I bring the same group of the street in and play a CD and say, OK, let’s interpret that music for a cover, well, 9 out of 10 people will be lost, and they’re gonna do something really corny and expected, and one person’s gonna do something amazing because that music spoke to them and it sent them in some direction where nobody else could go, and that’s the area for me where it gets more interesting and exciting, and… more emotional, and that’s where the best work comes from.”

this quote has inspired me to get more in touch with music on visual levels like that of a VJ as they share the same principles visualizing the sound through movement using programs like processing, aftereffects etc.

on one of my recent project which i have blogged about sound and image, i found on researching for the project a wide range of interactive method to advertise a client and would like to share them with you, as it is important that young creative like myself see what is to come in the design world and learn as much as they can at university. There are great tutor and student around that can teach you the basics of new software and crazes.

so on researching that project and looking on the net a random things i liked I found a lot of new creative ways to communicate to people in this ever changing word but right now the people who are interesting me are people like Fallon, Universal Everything, Digital.

They are conncting to people on new level using things like Hypertag systems, Processing/Arbuino and some crazy interactive sensor advertising.

Hypertag is a point, click receive sensor device which allows brands to connect with their target audiences through their mobile phones at the right place and time, and measure the results. it can be fixed to poster panels, worn by promotional staff other marketing displays. Consumers simply activate Bluetooth or infer-red but in most cases people have it on anyways which is also a bonus as it will connect, so they can interact and receive multimedia content.

Hypertag system

this image shows you the diversity of things it can send to a mobile device. i think it a great way to interact with you target audience especially if your into poster/billboard design still like me then it takes your ad to a new level of communication, like in my sound and image work with the billboard and mobile information visuals.

Digit:

Digit human interaction-Digital graffiti wall

Digit-human interaction

the brief asked digit to create an interactive experience to complement Motorola’s sponsorship of the Miami Winter Music.

the solution to the brief was very creative and well thought of.

they built a digital graffiti wall on which users could produce their own art. The wall had a built-in ultrasonic sensor that interacted with a digital spray-can to produce a virtual graffiti artwork. This simultaneously generated a unique piece of music that complemented the visuals. Both could be downloaded to the user’s mobile phone as a background image and ringtone.

i thought this idea was brilliant, it doesn’t just create virtual art but generates music so the image and sound can be downloaded to the phone. i find this idea really interesting and innovative. what a great way to connect to poeple. i would of loved to of got the chance to be part of this. weather it be in the making or just interacting, it was a great way to get pepole to connect with music and youth culture.

as a fan of graffiti, the history of and the styles. but not of the cost and the tax we pay to remove it so this to me is a great ideas. i want one for my house so i can spray and create with no limits. fun fun fun!

anyways it got such good feed back that The Motoglyph was then used as part of a major contemporary design exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Then it went round the world and was awarded a Cannes Lion award for excellence, which it well deserved for it innovative approach.

we are Fallon:

Fallon-Tate Tracks

Fallon-Tate Tracks

Fallon solution to getting inner city londoners on the very door step of the Tate Modern in Southwark to engage in the arts. Southwark being a very poor borough with lot of disengaged 16-24 years old. there idea was to get cool and hip musicians that the age group like to piece a piece of art in the gallery and create music for the piece of art, sculpture etc.

Musicians included The Chemical Brothers, ex-Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, The Long Blondes and Willy Mason among others from the worlds of hip-hop, garage, indie and dance.

Fallons idea got a great load of publicity and a big out come of young people coming to the event they had posters, graffiti stencils sticker etc to attractive there target audience attention. i think this was innovative and genius idea. As we live in a information technology world with a mass of communication possibilities we as designers need to new creative things to stand out and get attention. So Fallon have inspired me to take my designs an concept to the next level and connect to the right crowds.

traveller interactive poster

Fallon also did this interactive poster for Traveller i believe it was placed in a airport and gained lots of attention from adult and children of all ages. i find it fun also. great stuff

make me a supermodel interactive advert

Fallon also teamed up with television show make me a supermodel to create an interactive ad that made models move along when people you walk past the picture ad. you could also text in or call and get a model of choice to walk towards you as if it were a cat walk. the TV show got so many viewer so the idea really court the eye of many.

Universal Everything:

Well universal everything a design group based in Sheffield and found by Matt Pyke and friends a few years ago. Their work is a mixture of art, design, technology and sound design together. to create beautiful innovative design work for a number of big names like Apple, Nike, Audi etc.

I am inspired by their unique approach to brief with a solution that it far beyond my reach for the time being, as I am just getting to grips with software that create part of their beautiful work. Software such as processing and Arduino where used to create striking ads such as the Audi one to name few.

Lots of there work are based around this innovative way of design creating one of pieces that run through the software and then are forever lost. Even thought they don’t always know what going to be created, they collaborate with people who have a better understanding of codes, 3D, architecture and people with new ideas.

They are well advance in there skill with the software and that’s why I put threm in my innovation now section.

Here are a few of ther inspiring works:

Universal Everything ad

This is a Audi ad which is done using java script software called processing

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.

i love the way the strips of colour follow the cars motion i hopefully be able to create something in this in future, i seem like a real fun project and i love the colour choices. Universal everything is doing a great job on a number of project.

Also Universal Everything did a thing called processing monsters which is more up my street with what i want out of software.

Processing monster:

Universal Everything-Processing Monsters

Universal Everything-Processing Monsters

These monster where created for lovebites festival and universal everything idea was to create at least 20’000 individual monsters. For this project they work on the designs, thinking out the parameters, shapes, radius, colour etc before going to processing to create it. then using a thing called many pdf which once you click it saves that image, so you can a number of unique prints. which is great for a limited addition idea as it really will be.

also there is a similar software well i would call it the brother of processing it is Arduino.

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino development environment (based on Processing). Arduino projects can be stand-alone or they can communicate with software on running on a computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP).

Arduino

The boards can be built by hand or purchased preassembled; the software can be downloaded for free. The hardware reference designs (CAD files) are available under an open-source license, you are free to adapt them to your needs.

i took this information from the website as i am new to the idea and this would be an intresting area to study. even though i was never good at electronics in school if there something creative and arty out of it i know more creative will be using.

recently in my area ive noticed it gets used to measuring pollution levels. the council launched Airwatch which gives people information about air quality. also gives them a number to call to report air pollution issues. it is also there to show the drivers and the public what effect they have on the environment. which to me its important as people should get the true fact and figure instead of possibilities.

Arduino-AirWatch

Before going to university I was keen on making posters, album covers and most definitely becoming a magazine designer, which I am still very much into, but I feel been at university I should try new things with success or failures and seeing what these things can do I am inspired to get my head around how they work so i can express my work through new way of communication. I might not be too good at it but over summer I am going to try and learn and get a better understanding all the same.

The brief ask us to collect primary data at Wrexham market and think of a series of ways to visualize the information collected. i chose to collect the types of carrier bags in and around the market over and hour. i chose this data as the environment is a big topic of discussion and thought it would be interesting to see what the majority of the public, well Wrexham market go’s were using.

For my final designs i came up with a series of three posters/flyers that could be in and around the market.

it took me a couple of attempt to think of a symbol that would express carrier bags data. i found it pretty difficult with just a carrier bag as it didn’t look like anything other that a vest and in the language of semiotics that would of been clothes data. so i thought that a silhouette shopper with a carrier bag would work well especially with the ideas i had in mind.

with the colour choices:

Red= danger, so danger to environment which is plastic

brown= nature, so earthy which is paper

green= positive, good for the environment which it canvas as there reusable

so i thought the colour choices worked well with my data also, as it’s clear, it’s understandable.

Wrexham Market-Carrier bag data

Wrexham Market Carrier bag data

Wrexham Market-Carrier bag data

these poster took me a couple of attempt. the middle image, pie chart silhouettes being the central element for all poster i created. thats why i put it in the middle, that big and strong with colour that catches your eye .

i decided as a fan of type wanted to play around with the data i collected in a different way and by doing that decided to pick helvetica typeface family as the typeface was made to be clear, legible and straightforward so it was a perfect choice for data as it work in the same way.i thought about hierarchy and how it works in size, colour, weight, spacing and placement to express important, so i thought the amount of each carrier bag controls the size and weight of type. i played with the positioning of the words and made them fit cleverly in a grid with Wrexham market data fitting perfectly in the rectangle grid also. this idea really worked for me and made me think more about the modernist ideologies of grids and hierarchies. i tried a variety of ways to show this differently on each but i really didn’t like the other attempt of changing weights but nothing work, so i decided to also use that across all the posters and only change the way to visualize the graph.

the graph was a great thing to play around with visually really tested my creaivity. i played around type in a similar way to before with the bottom poster it looked like a graph visually, using the percentage to control the size of each material with the percent and the carrier bag text fitting in perfectly in the spaces on my own little grid and rules.

then coming to the top chart control by percentages each silhouette shopper is 5% of data and the colours are same as central piece. straightforward traditional way of visualising data.

with the middle poster i was buying an item on Ebay and was measuring for sizes and got inspired to make a percentage ruler and work with images and type positioning in a similiar way to rest keeping the ideologies consistent throughout.

this project really tested me visually, i’ll be honest i was lost at the start of this project and thought it was going to be hell fire, but and i say big but in the end i really learnt alot more about modernist ideologies of grid systems, hierarchies, legibility rational typeface styles. also understanding more about the power of semiotics and data in general inspired by modern creative ways to show data i really would of like to pie chart hoody out of actual material as there as that would of really gone with the ideas to recycle, reduce, reuse.

i initially wanted to do something on a bag and put the data back in and around the enviroment. so i did another final board express this:

Wrexham Market-Carrier bag data

i did this as i feel it would be a great way for people to think about what impact they have on the environment, as even in a hour of data it was devastating to see. putting the data on bag was to me a great idea as they could brought and sold on the market stalls, this way my idea also touches on the financial crisis as well as the environment. If people used more reusable canvas, cotton, wool carriers then the stall owners or any shop owners for that matter wouldn’t have to fork out more money for plastic bags.

this video is called typolution. it expresses the corse of pollution all done in type i think its well ace. Typolution was made for the festival Kosmopolis to Barcelona. The biennial event which does the promotion of the literature and of its writers, its the Organization typographic minimalist film which regulated rhythmically by the song “Nostrand” group Ratatat was made by Olive Tree Beaudoin.

these are just some of the videos that have really made me want to use after effect and play with type in more ways that just the static realm. As the latest in creative suite software has gives us as designers the unlimited experimentation with typography and cant wait to create some interesting kenetic typography. As i could use the talent for advertising, movies title sequences and my own website to have a showreel of my work with creative motion type.

well we was set a brief which was to promote two composer of the 21st Century Micheal Nyman and Ralph Vaughan Williams music, which the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra were playing. their music is based on the sound of the british isle and used in movies on sea visuals and landscapes.the brief asked us to communicate to the young audience of today via sound and image. i had a series of three pieces that the audience could engage with in a number of places.

first:

billboard and bluetooth hypertag system

before i started designing for this project i went to liverpool and walked around the city and took photos. i walked to the universities, clubs and skateparks places in which my target audience it going to see my work and interact with it. As a young person myself, i find a lot of young people are into urban art/ street and thought it would be a good way to catch there eye and be intrigued by what my work is expressing.

billboard design

the billboard design came from me doing sound drawing, which ment listening to both composers and drawing waves and motion via the sound of the instruments, tempo and beats. after drawing them i decided to add some graffiti element to the design to catch the eye of young alternative crouds. 3D arrows seemed to work well with my work and wanted to create a series of final designs using the arrows to connect them together.

i thought about all the places i could of put this work and took a number of photo for this to be placed. on trains, in trains, billboards, at universities, skateparks, clubs and the university really court my eye. it a meeting place for the young alternative students to learn, hangout and get connected to my next piece of work:

mobile graphics

this is based upon the hypertag point, click, recieve, system which is a new innovative way to connect with the target audience by blue toothing information to mobile phones.Consumers activate Bluetooth or infra-red on their handset and the Hypertag then detects the user’s phone by proximity or opt-in. Digital content specific to that model is then delivered direct to the user’s phone.

it a great way to deliliver more content that just a poster.

my ideas was to send the posters image, the composers pictures and a song from each one for them to listen to and to tell them about what the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra where doing also telling them about my next piece which is graffiti tag arrows.

Graffiti direction arrows

this piece came to me when i was walking around liverpool trying to find my way to the Philharmonic Hall and realized i needed directions. i thought about it when designing and came up with a concept which young people understand and used it to the Orchestras advantage. as you can see i visualized it for you to understand. using two of the coloured arrows out of six directing you to the philharmonic hall. i thought it would be a different way to interact with my target audience and be fun for them to take part in, also could get people talking more about my work, which is a good way of advertising also.

Skate park quarter pipe design

i’d recently been to Rampworx in liverpool before doing this project to an all girl event and the outcome of young, alternative people was amazing. having friend who are into extreme sport like myself i knew this had to be a great place for my work to be presented, even more so interact with parts of it. thats why the headphone really work as well as being part of the motto ”the philharmonic experience get tuned in”. they can be grinded, ridden and skated.

incorporating the arrows and sound drawing into this designs makes the other work recognizable and gives the orchestra a kind of youthful, street art identity, which makes them intrigued . so i feel i put my work out there in places that the possible target audience with receive the message and realize that there’s nothing wrong with listening to orchestra music as other genre pick tempos and elements from the history of the music.

overall i am really happy with this project and have learnt a lot from it. from sound drawing to new engaging technologies. as well as visualizing my solutions clearly and effectively. i was interesting trying to get to grips with the music and it purposes to really show it young people and i feel i have used a known style of art among us to connect with them. moving away from the traditional orchestra advertising. As even thought they don’t know much about it they can tell the different from a dance poster to a orchestra one at a glance usually so i tried to keep there attention for much longer and feel this could succeed and i am very happy with my outcome and hope to tackle more project in such a way.

wow is the way to describe this designer.

Paula scher is a New York based graphic designer who has blown the minds of many over the year with her great designs. she is the dame of design and most definitely a graphic design rock star with her anarchy and rule breaking habit’s. i love all of her work, but mostly for her inventive use of typography which has influenced many of designer and will forever more.

i find her a great idol to follow as a female in the design world, as she has set the stage for woman of design to come and show there talent but most of all enjoy the design experience that is to come. more and more we are seeing woman designers spreading there wings and showing great pertential so i thank paula for help us get to where we are today.

also when Paula was a young designer like i, she did really understand the do’s and don’t of design mixing the history of art and styles together to create album cover. she love some great designers but really hated the trend at the time she was learning, as everything was getting made in Helvetica and she found it the cleanest, most boring, most fascistic really repressive typeface. she decided that her goal was to design in something other that helvetica.

don’t get me wrong i don’t hate Helvetica, i love it for it purpose and the way it cleaned up identities in it time. but i don’t want to uses it for all of my design work, in some instance it works depending on your client and their ideals and what the purpose of the work is and it out-come.

i love her quotes:

Bigger is definitely better. Bold words wrap you up and pull you in. You’re hooked!

my work is play, i play when i design.

Be culturally literate, because if you don’t have any understanding of the world you live in and the culture you live in, you’re not going to express anything to anybody else.”

work:

paula scher

The Public Theatre logo

the timeline for the logo by Paula Scher for the public theatre. it is urban and loud, i love these designs am i a big fan of her logo design they are bold eye catching typography i love the way she’s played with kerning, tracking, the horizontal scale, size and colour choices. i love the way she put the inside the letter P as it still legible but but not that important. in the time she worked with The

Public Theatre paula did a number of poster which were eye catching and loud in the way they were design :

The Public Theatre posters

this poster was innovative and unique in it time and paula really got people looking with her type that really got you interested and really spoke out, the design was liked that much that other people started copying the style and it ended up all over new york. i love the slight dada feel to it moving away from the traditional type formation of baselines size direction etc. i feel designing in this way really catch your eye and makes you want to know more and more. which is a great thing for us designer to achieve with all briefs.

both poster really sold the interesting stuff that was going on there at the time.

the Public Theatre-under the radar poster

this is another of her public theatre designs which i find inspiring, as i love the modernism era especially in graphics design the way that thing are still well control and legible yet the off set layout give it that creative edge. i love the way it flows with the hierarchy, using size and colour. the information is well communicated and is easily understood.

Interior environmental graphics-42nd Street Studios|The Duke Theater.

i am a big fan of environmental graphic using the object and the spaces already there. using the context in which the work will soon be placed as the canvas. i love the concept and it navigational qualities.paula designed a beautiful way to show information graphic, breaking up different areas of the studio into colour coordinated section which are easy to identify and navigate.

i really like the colour choices and layout of the text and the direction in which they go. see no need to spend more money on signs especially with the situation we are all in financially, but even so there’s no need when the building floors, walls and ceilings are there to do the job.

exterior view of the New Jersey Performing Art Centre

i really like the idea of this exterior design. designed using the college’s subjects to decorate the building.

This work really excite me lol. make me want live on or work on the 5th floor so i can have it haha. the idea is bigger better and bolder than usual signage where you have to wall up right close to even know where you are. i love the way it fold on floor and ceiling and inspired one of my older projects. if i get my own studio well i hope to when i become a more experience designer i am going to create navigational signs on the interior and exterior of the building in a similar way. isnt it beautiful.

well as you can see i have great appreciation for Paula Scher and feel like i could write extensively about each and every piece of her work for hours and go on about how much it excite me but if you have taste you too feel the same. so i decided to write about a few things of hers i like and what inspires me and interested me at the moment. As depending on my mood or things I’m working on i think deeper about different work and find new thing about them that i might not of realized before.

fame is not the reason i love Paula Scher it her work and the innovative style which she bring to her work is what i love. the environmental graphic that is mind blowing and so creative inspires me. i love the way she don’t conform to a style or way of design and is forever reinventing herself, learning playing creating. it beautiful.
